Getting inspired to do a little cruisin’ of your own? Ready to hit the road for a weekend ride to a place you’ve never been before? We can show you the best trips in your neck of the woods and you won’t even have to stop to fuel up. Each week, we pick a starting city and plan a getaway to some of the most charming, energetic, and just plain fun places that you’ll only need one tank of gas to reach. When it’s all over, you’ll be able to say… TANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!
Starting City: Portland, OR
Destination: Tillamook, OR
Distance: about 75 miles
After the holidays are over, houses are left inundated with sweets and treats left by friends, relatives, and maybe even Santa himself. Winter is the best time to indulge in cakes, cookies, candies, and many more delicious goodies. This week, we travel from Portland to a small town on the Pacific that is synonymous with the word “delicious” here on the West Coast: Tillamook, Oregon.

Tillamook is named after the native inhabitants of the land, and are likely related to the Coast Salish tribes that spread out along the coast north of them in Washington and British Columbia. The first European settler in the area was Joseph Champion in 1851 and he made a home from a carved-out spruce tree. The early inhabitants of the town built a community boat called “The Morningstar” to transport goods to marketplaces on the region’s many rivers. The city has depended a lot on the lumber and dairy industries for its sustenance.
Nowhere is that more apparent than the Tillamook Cheese Factory. The factory gets its milk from almost 100 farmers in the Tillamook County Creamery Association, a co-op dedicated to supply the best milk from the most well-treated cows. Tillamook is known for its delicious products like yogurt, butter, and ice cream, and its factory is quickly becoming a tourist destination that the town is proud of. They are even in the process of building a new Visitors Center set to open in the summer of 2018.

If you’re lactose-intolerant, you can spend time on other activities. There are many tours to take courtesy of Tillamook Eco Adventures. You can explore the county’s waterfalls, see the best views of the land on its Secret Vista tour, and in the summer you can even search for Sasquatch! To catch something a little less cryptic, you can head to the water to fish for Chinook salmon or to the coastal beaches to go clamming.
The sights, sounds, and smells-- the ones upwind from the cows!-- are a treat to experience when you visit Tillamook at any time of year!
STRETCH YOUR LEGS: Right in the middle of your journey is Coleman’s 9N Shady Rest in Gales Creek. Their reviews on websites use words like “hearty” and “country-style”, and by the looks of this diner, classic Americana is the theme for both the food and the decor. They have a spice cake called “hummingbird cake” that you could probably pair nicely with one of their excellent milkshakes. Happy eating!
