Getting inspired to do a little cruisin’ of your own? Ready to hit the road for a weekend ride to a place you’ve never been before? We can show you the best trips in your neck of the woods and you won’t even have to stop to fuel up. Each week, we pick a starting city and plan a getaway to some of the most charming, energetic, and just plain fun places that you’ll only need one tank of gas to reach. When it’s all over, you’ll be able to say… TANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!
Starting City: New York, NY
Destination: Saugerties, NY
Distance: about 110 miles
Every place has a different feel during each season. Nowhere is that more true than the Catskills Mountains in New York, with moods as numerous as its leaves. Spring sees the burbling of thawed blue brooks; summer is lush and green with sun; fall lights the trees ablaze with hot reds and oranges; and winter completes the year with its white stillness. The town of Saugerties, New York is nestled amongst all of this and is a one-tank trip with several experiences from the city that never sleeps, New York City.

The land that Saugerties rests on was bought from an Esopus Indian by a governor in 1677. The land was very briefly occupied (five days, in fact) by the British during the Revolutionary War, and in 1811 the hamlet of Saugerties was established. The town was named Ulster at its incorporation in 1831 but it was renamed Saugerties in 1855. Industries in Saugerties through the 19th and 20th centuries include iron, paper, quarries, ice blocks, bricks, steamboats, and white lead. Today there are still many hamlets, or clusters of houses, in the region.
One of the best activities in the region is sightseeing, with many hiking trails and scenic byways in the area. West of Saugerties proper, in the same county, is the Catskills Mountains Scenic Byway on Route 28. If you’d like to get out of your car and into the snow, there are several trails where you can snowshoe through the mountails. And at the end of the day, you can buy special gifts to take away from this lovely area from Platte Creek Maple Farm, where there are bottles of maple syrup and other delicious treats.

This weekend on December 3rd, the annual Holiday in the Village will be occurring in downtown Saugerties. There will be a petting zoo at the historic Kierstede house, and a horse-drawn carriage will be driven by the fire station. Kids will also have a chance to enter a toy raffle, with drawings being held throughout the day. The day will end with a Community Tree and Menorah Lighting that is sure to start the holidays off right. Whatever season you want to experience in the Catskills, you can spend it in Saugerties!
STRETCH YOUR LEGS: If you stray off I-87 for a few miles, you can find a wonderful collection of motorcycles at Motorcyclepedia, an extensive museum of the best vehicles on two wheels. They have over 500 motorcycles on display, including a vast selection of Indian motorcycles from the first half of the 20th century. The museum is only open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, but this landmark may warrant a day trip all its own.
